We are celebrating NarakChaturdashi every year on Ashwin Krushna Chaturdashi current year it is on 13th November 2012. God ShriKrishna killed demon Narakasur on this day. GovindAshtakam is in Sanskrit. It is a very beautiful creation of Shri ParamHamsa Swami BrahmaNand. It is a praise of God Govind in eight stanzas hence it is called as (Govind) Ashtakam. Swami Brahmanand is describing virtues of God Govind and advising the devotees to worship God Govind.
1 God Govind is chindanad swaroop means he is always happy. His virtues and everything is very sweet to hear. He is caretaker of those who don’t have any protector. He can lift you up from the troubles, difficulties of this material world. He is described as a garland in the neck of Goddess of Lakshmi. He is worshiped by the God Shiva. Hence O Devotee! Always worship God Govind who is forever happy.
2 He lives in an ocean. He is protector of gods. Garud is his vehicle. He always drinks amrut. He likes truth and peace. He knows everything by his mind. He is knowledge. He is an abode for the Rushies and yogis and Munies. He is a place from where nobody can displace them (yogis and others). Hence O Devotee! Always worship God Govind who is forever happy.
3 Courageous devotees meditate him by their intelligence. Yogis know him by his great names. He is the creator three worlds. We cannot find him or we can’t get any knowledge about him by our mind and other things. He always appears in a new body. He can be meditated in our heart. Hence O Devotee! Always worship God Govind who is forever happy.
4 He is maya. He has wear garland of flowers around his neck. He is destroyer of sins. He is Gopal means he has to take cows for feeding. He has killed Shishupal. He is Kal. He is beyond all arts. He has defeated swan by his speed. He is an enemy of demon Mur. Hence O Devotee! Always worship God Govind who is forever happy.
5 He is everywhere just like sky. Many Granthas described his virtues however he is like us. He is always happy like gods and he is enemy of demons. He resides in the cave of intelligence. He is beyond the speed of words (talk, speech). He likes navneet (butter). He always establishes good principles. Hence O Devotee! Always worship God Govind who is forever happy.
6 He is God. He is husband of Goddess Lakshmi. He is master of God Brahma and God Shiva. He does well to us. He is God Brahmin and other Gods. He has long and curling hairs. He is destroyer of sins in Kaliyuga. He is master of the Sun in the sky. He is SheshNag who has held this world on his head. He is master of this world. He is Govardhandhari means he has held Govardhan Mountain on his right hands’ little finger. Hence O Devotee! Always worship God Govind who is forever happy.
7 He is husband of Goddess Lakshmi. He is destroyer of fear and troubles. He is giver of happiness. He is destroyer of ill will. He is peace. He lives in everybody’s heart. He is caretaker of three worlds. He is destroyer of demons. His life is very pious and beautiful. Hence O Devotee! Always worship God Govind who is forever happy.
8 He is great among greatest. He is above all. He is brother of Indra (king of Gods). He has great virtues. He is very powerful and strong. He is Guru of all Gurus. He is head of Yadna. Hence O Devotee! Always worship God Govind who is forever happy.
9 The devotee who recites this stotra of God Vishnu who has held Gada in his hand becomes happy and sinless and receives all the happiness in his life and at the end goes to Vaikuntha which is abode of God Vishnu.
Thus here completes this GovindAshtakam created by Brahmanand Swami.
गोविन्दाष्टकम्
चिदानन्दाकारं श्रुतिसरसारं समरसं
निराधाराधारं भवजलधिपारं परगुणम् ।
रमाग्रीवाहारं व्रजवनविहारं हरनुतं
सदा तं गोविन्दं परमसुखकन्दं भजत रे ॥ १ ॥
महाम्भोधिस्थानं स्थिरचरनिदानं दिविजपं
सुधाधारापानं विहगपतियानं यमरतम् ।
मनोज्ञं सुज्ञानं मुनिजननिधानं ध्रुवपदं
सदा तं गोविन्दं परमसुखकन्दं भजत रे ॥ २ ॥
धिया धीरैर्ध्येयं श्रवणपुटपेयं यतिवरै-
र्महावाक्यैर्ज्ञेयं त्रिभुवनविधेयं विधिपरम् ।
मनोमानामेयं सपदि हृदि नेयं नवतनुं
सदा तं गोविन्दं परमसुखकन्दं भजत रे ॥ ३ ॥
महामाया जालं विमलवनमालं मलहरं
सुभालं गोपालं निहतशिशुपालं शशिमुखम् ।
कलातीतं कालं गतिहतमरालं मुररिपुं
सदा तं गोविन्दं परमसुखकन्दं भजत रे ॥ ४ ॥
नभोबिम्बस्फीतं निगमगणगीतं समगतिं
सुरौघै: सम्प्रीतं दितिजविपरीतं पुरिशयम् ।
गिरां मार्गातीतं स्वदितनवनीतं नयकरं
सदा तं गोविन्दं परमसुखकन्दं भजत रे ॥ ५ ॥
परेशं पद्मेशं शिवकमलजेशं शिवकरं
द्विजेशं देवेशं तनुकुटिलकेशं कलिहरम् ।
खगेशं नागेशं निखिलभुवनेशं नगधरं
सदा तं गोविन्दं परमसुखकन्दं भजत रे ॥ ६ ॥
रमाकान्तं कान्तं भवभयभयान्तं भवसुखं
दुराशान्तं शान्तं निखिलहृदि भान्तम भुवनपम् ।
विवादान्तं दान्तं दनुजनिचयान्तं सुचरितं
सदा तं गोविन्दं परमसुखकन्दं भजत रे ॥ ७ ॥
जगज्ज्येष्ठं श्रेष्ठं सुरपतिकनिष्ठं क्रतुपतिं
बलिष्ठं भूयिष्ठं त्रिभुवनवरिष्ठं वरवहम् ।
स्वनिष्ठं धर्मिष्ठं गुरुगुणगरिष्ठं गुरुवरं
सदा तं गोविन्दं परमसुखकन्दं भजत रे ॥ ८ ॥
गदापाणेरेतददुरितदलनं दुःखशमनं
विशुद्धात्मा स्तोत्रं पठति मनुजो यस्तु सततम् ।
स भुक्त्वा भोगौघं चिरमिह ततोऽपास्तवृजिनः
परं विष्णोः स्थानं व्रजति खलु वैकुण्ठभुवनम् ॥ ९ ॥
॥ इति श्रीपरमहंसस्वामिब्रह्मानन्दविरचितं गोविन्दाष्टकं सम्पूर्णम् ॥
१) जो चिदानन्दस्वरुप आहे, श्रुतिचे सुमधुर सार आहे, समरस आहे, निराधारांचा आधार आहे, संसारसागर पार करुन नेणारा आहे, दुसर्‍याच्या गुणांना आक्षय देणारा आहे, श्रीलक्ष्मीच्या गळ्यांतील हार आहे, वृन्दावनांत विहार करणारा आहे, तसेच जो भगवान श्रीशंकरांकडून पूजित आहे त्या परमानन्द गोविन्दाचे सदैव भजन कर.
२) ज्याने महासमुद्राचा आश्रय केला आहे, जो चराचर विश्वाचे आदिकारण आहे, देवांचे संरक्षण करणारा आहे, अमृतपान करणारा आहे, गरुड हे ज्याचे वहान आहे, जो यम (अहिंसा, सत्यादि) नियमांचे पालन करणारा आहे, जो मनोज्ञ, ज्ञानस्वरुप आहे, मुनिजनांचा आश्रय आहे.ध्रुवस्थान आहे. त्या परमानन्द गोविन्दाचे सदैव भजन कर.
३) धीर पुरुषांकडून बुद्धिने ज्याचे ध्यान केले जाते, कर्णपुटांनी ज्याचे पान केले जाते, योगी ज्याला महावाक्यांनी ओळखतात. जो तीन्ही लोकांचा विधाता आणि विधिवाक्या पलीकडे आहे, ज्याचे मन आदी प्रमाणांनी ज्ञान होउ शकत नाही, जो हृदयांत ध्यान करण्यास योग्य आहे, आणि जो नेहमी नविन शरिर धारण करणारा आहे अरे त्या परमानन्द गोविन्दाचे सदैव भजन कर.
४) ज्याचे मायारुपी महाजाल आहे, ज्याने निर्मळ वनमाला घातली आहे, जो दोषांचे हरण करणारा आहे, ज्याचे कपाळ सुन्दर आहे, जो गोपाल आहे, ज्याने शिशुपालाचा वध केला आहे, ज्याचे मुख चंद्रासारखे सुन्दर आहे, जो कलातीत आहे, काल आहे, आपल्या सुन्दर गतीने हंसावर विजय मिळविणारा आहे, जो मुर दैत्याचा शत्रु आहे अरे त्या परमानन्द गोविन्दाचे सदैव भजन कर.
५) जो आकाशाप्रमाणे व्यापक आहे, शास्त्रे ज्याचे गुणगान करतात, जो सगळ्यांप्रमाणे समान गतीचा आहे, देवतांसारखा अत्यंत आनंदी आणि दैत्यांचा शत्रु आहे, जो बुद्धिरुपी गुहेंत स्थित आहे, जो वाणीच्या वेगापेक्षा बाहेर आहे, नवनीताचा आस्वाद घेणार आहे, तसेच जो नीतिचा संस्थापक आहे अरे त्या परमानन्द गोविन्दाचे सदैव भजन कर.
६) जो परमेश्वर आहे, लक्ष्मीपती आहे, शिव आणि ब्रह्माचा पण स्वामी आहे, जो कल्याणकारी आहे, द्विज आणि देवांचा ईश्वर आहे, लांब आणि कुरळे केस असलेला, कलियुगांतील पापांचा नाश करणारा आहे, आकाशांत संचार करणार्‍या सूर्याचा शासक आहे, धरणीतल डोक्यावर धारण करणारा शेष नाग आहे, जो संपूर्ण भूमंडलाचा स्वामी आहे, जो गोवर्धनधारी आहे, अरे त्या परमानन्द गोविन्दाचे सदैव भजन कर.
७) जो लक्ष्मीपति आहे, विमल द्दुति आहे, भवभयाचे हरण करणारा आहे, संसारांतील सुख देणारा आहे, वाईट इच्छेचा नाश करणारा आहे, शान्त आहे, सर्वांच्या हृदयी भासमान होणारा आहे, त्रिभुवनाचा पालक आहे, विवाद, मतभिन्नतेचा अंत करणारा आहे, दमशील आहे, दैत्य दलाचा नाश करणारा आहे, सुन्दर चरित्र असलेला आहे, अरे त्या परमानन्द गोविन्दाचे सदैव भजन कर.
८) जो संसारामध्ये सर्वांत मोठा आहे, श्रेष्ठ आहे, सुरराज इंद्राचा अनुज आहे, यज्ञपति आहे, बलिष्ठ आहे, भूयिष्ठ आहे, त्रिभुवनांत सर्वश्रेष्ठ आहे, वर देणारा आहे, आत्मनिष्ठ आहे, धर्मिष्ठ आहे, महान गुण धारण करणारा आहे, गुरुचां गुरु आहे, अरे त्या परमानन्द गोविन्दाचे सदैव भजन कर.
९) जो विशुद्धात्मा पुरुष, हातांत गदा धारण केलेल्या गोविन्दाचे हे पापनाशक, दुःखनाशक स्तोत्र नेहमी वाचतो, तो चिरकालपर्यंत नाना सुखपोभोगांचा उपभोग घेऊन, पापमुक्त होऊन भगवान श्रीविष्णुंच्या परमपावन धाम वैकुन्ठास नक्कीच जातो.
अशा रितीने परमहंस स्वामी ब्रह्मानन्दानी रचिलेले गोविन्दाष्टकं पुरे झाले.
